Prof. Sonata Jarmalaitė
Professor Sonata Jarmalaitė is a biomedical scientist and professor at Vilnius University. Her main scientific interests focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer and other pathologies. She holds a PhD and Habilitation in Natural Sciences (Biology) from Vilnius University, a Master’s degree in Biology from Vilnius University, a qualification in Biomedical Biology from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, and a Master’s degree in Health Policy and Management from Mykolas Romeris University.
Since 1989, Professor Jarmalaitė has been engaged in research at Vilnius University, where she currently serves as a full professor and teaches Oncogenetics. Her academic career also includes a postdoctoral fellowship at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in Helsinki (2000–2003) and professional training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (USA). Over the years, she has supervised multiple PhD candidates and contributed extensively to the development of doctoral and master’s programs in genetics and molecular biology.
Professor Jarmalaitė is the author of numerous scientific publications and has led or participated in several national and international research projects, including initiatives funded by the Lithuanian Research Council. Her recent projects focus on tumor complexity, chronic inflammation in periodontitis, and models of healthcare delivery for oncology patients during pandemics. She maintains active research collaborations with Tampere University (Finland), the Portuguese Oncology Institute in Porto, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (USA).
Her professional achievements have been recognized with the Lithuanian Science Award (2019) and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas (2019). Professor Jarmalaitė also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Onkologija and a member of the editorial board of Acta Medica Lithuanica. She is a member of the National Health Council, the Cancer Prevention and Control Council, and represents Lithuania in the European Commission’s Cancer Subgroup. She chairs the Board of the Lithuanian Oncologists’ Society and actively contributes to national science and health policy development.
